Is the roofer being hired a qualified roofer and listed in any trade organisations that would verify their abilities, often reputable builders will be a member of the National Craftsman Guild.
Reliability:
Reliability and credibility of individuals or business, some people are more reliable than others but look for signs of reliance and consistency when asking questions and the answers and evidence given. Clear communication and consistency of timing when they show up for quote and if what they say is reliable and verifiable.
Work Guarantee:
Insurance and work guarantees offered for project, is there any question as them standing over the job and coming back if there are any problems. If there is unanticipated problems like leaks with the work at a later date, will the company stand by the work quality for a period of time that makes it reasonable to assume the job has been done correctly.
Previous Clients:
If you can speak to previous clients who got work done by the contractor. If any of your neighbours or locals in your area has ever had work done before, that you can get their opinion on as to reliability and credibility of contractors.
Reviews:
Number of reviews the company has online and quality of reviews, good companies are enthusiastic to get consistent good reviews for the work they do and usually follow up on this as part of their work. While reviews can be fake, look for specific details in reviews such as contractors name and work location to identify credible reviews, fake reviews will always be vague and non specific.
